Threads of Memory

A committed artist, Christine Mathieu enjoys working across multiple media to give form to her refined aesthetic. Trained in photography at ENSAD (École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs), she first expressed herself through graphic design in various cultural fields as head of her studio, L’Épi- cerie. Signage projects, exhibition design, and visual identities all benefited from her eye and creativity in the service of numerous institutions.

She later developed a practice in museography, through which she built an ethnographic understanding of popular manual know-how, traditionally associated with women — practices that forge human connections across eras and cultures. Anthropological in her approach, she gradually constructs through her exhibitions a dialogue between ancient Western and non-Western craft traditions and contemporary visual forms, highlighting the common threads that unite cultures through these modes of expression.

Whether working with wooden masks, beads, pottery, or lace, she seeks to reclaim memory, bringing to light convergences and synchronicities.
