DOMUS & ATELIER ESSENZA

Tarantism and Gender

DOMUS first year, artists and curators were directly invited to spend one or two weeks in Galatina. Our guests were free to work on a theme they liked and we did our best to connect them with all local and national cultural operators. The goal of then 2019 residence was and still is to give a space to artists and curators in the Mediterranean area, to support their work, to create a network of contacts connecting individuals and independent spaces. Through various events DOMUS spread the knowledge of the phenomenon of tarantism on an international level, but also we brought contemporary art to an Italian area that is poor in contemporary art museums, art centers and galleries. Salento is still an extreme land of Southern Italy, it is for this reason that starting from this land, we opened up a reflection at an international level and we raised awareness among the southern public to be moved by contemporary art.

Mouna Jemal Siala - “Presence and Identity in the Lands of the Remorse"

End of residence project by Mouna Jemal Siala and Valentina Gioia Levy, In collaboration with A100 Gallery and Gigi Rigliaco Gallery, Sunday 7 July 2019 9:00 pm at the Gigi Rigliaco Gallery Via R.Orsini, 10 Galatina, Italy

DOMUS Artist Residency is pleased to present the artist's end of residence project Tunisian Mouna Jemal Siala and curator Valentina Gioia Levy who will be hosted by A100 Gallery and Gigi Rigliaco Gallery. "Presence and identity in the Lands of Remorse" is an exhibition project happening at the end of the residency period that the artist and the curator have done in Galatina. Art replaces magic and is constituted active tool of resistance to disappearance and oblivion, but also to the fragmentation of female identity that confronts and clashes with patriarchal society and the danger of a historical regression towards fundamentalism and violence.
